Creative filmmaker based in Christchurch, NZ
Andy Johnson is an experienced freelance video producer based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
After completing a Bachelor of Design majoring in Visual Communication at Massey University, Andy began his career at Oktobor, a visual effects and animation studio in Pōneke Wellington and a subsidiary of Silverscreen Productions. There, he developed a strong foundation in post-production within the fast-paced world of commercial filmmaking, contributing to high-end television advertising and visual effects work on The Lord of the Rings films.
Andy later moved to London, where he continued to refine his craft in one of the world’s leading post-production hubs. Working in Soho as a commercial assistant editor, and later as a visual effects editor at the Academy Award–winning studio Double Negative, he contributed to major feature films including Pride and Prejudice, Batman Begins, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Following several successful years in London’s post-production industry, Andy transitioned into freelance filmmaking. His work has taken him across the globe, with projects in London, Amsterdam, Qatar, South Korea, and China, where he was based in Shanghai for over two years. During this time, he built a diverse portfolio spanning commercial campaigns for international brands such as Lamborghini, Johnnie Walker, Adidas, and Porsche, alongside independent short films that received recognition at film festivals.
In parallel with his filmmaking career, Andy has developed a strong commitment to education and mentoring. In 2015, he trained as a teacher and went on to work across both secondary and tertiary sectors, teaching design, photography, filmmaking, and animation. He currently holds a position at the New Zealand Broadcasting School at Ara, where he tutors students in Screen, Radio, and Journalism.
